Description
This painting records a specific incident in which Governor Lin Zexu and three other noted officials were confined in an icebound boat for three days. To pass the time the men drank fine wine, enhancing the friendly atmosphere in the bitter cold. The artist has clearly indicated the figures’ social statuses: servants are rendered as types, not individuals; the governor is in the center of the boat dressed in a bright red robe; and the other officials are placed accordingly, the lowest one raising his glass in a toast.

Community Response by Ross McLaren
“The painting reminds viewers that even in adverse circumstances good friends and table fellowship make for a good time.”
