“What strikes me is how beautiful this image is, and how hard it is to find places so quiet and serene in China right now. Outside of Shanghai, ‘water’ villages have been turned into tourist attractions with ten-acre parking lots. The few times I have seen such serenity are like this photo—at dusk—and in moments when I was not looking for it. But how much longer will this be possible? I wonder.”

I am currently living in Nashville, but recently moved here from Chicago. Out of the whole exhibition, this image caught my eye the strongest. It is very beautiful and romantic, reminding me of many of the paintings I had seen at the beginning of the exhibition. As I meditate more into the image, I start to realize the bridge is slightly jagged. The railing is what stands out first. Then I realized the background has the silhouette of factories. It just takes me back. I am reminded by my initial aw of it’s beauty and then realize what times we live in.
